Reverend Beat – Get on your knees

Recommended by: Antti Lauronen

Genre: Blusey thrash rock revival pseudo gospel music

With what one can only describe as an oddity, Revenrend Man presents us with a brand of blusey thrash rock revival pseudo gospel music, with songs that are probably considered blasphemous in at least one state in the United States of America. Antti has come with a pretty left field and thoroughly entertaining pick, im sure there is much more where this came from folks and I for one look forward to hearing it. Ladies and gentelmen ….Reverend beat.

Cheers Antti.

Here is a gem for the webcentric, musicgeeks & fashionfreaks brought to you from this weeks catablog evangelist.

Webcentric-Musicgeekery

Spotify - I’ve been long waiting for web music service that offers a bredth and depth of catalogue, discoverability, ease of use and immediacy. I am tempted to say that the wait may almost be over, Musac start up Spotify demonstrates many of these characteristics and suggests that we may be closer to a sustainable internet music service that satisfies both the hawkish RIAA and the free’a'holic music fan.

The beauty is in its simplicity, although it uses client side software; so like  itunes you have to download and install the software, it seems to have seamless web integration. All you need do is download, install, search and normally instantly find a song your listening to.  Spotify also has a discoverability feature, akin to Pandora, Lastfm and others.

What I like about this service is that its proprietors do not pretend that they can give away everything away for free, subsquently adopting a freemium style business model, supported by display and radio style i-dent advertising between songs.  It is a non-disruptive, simple user expereince that delivers pretty much what you need when you want it….if you are connected to the internet of course. Naturally, Spotify will have to deal with all the classic music start up issues of scaling, user adoption and legality. In my view the more interesting challenge will be that of cracking “mobile”. In a world where music consumption is typified by the ubiqutous ipod, mobility is a key factor in the longterm viability of any music service that is targeting a mainstream audience and possible digital music access domination!

Round About Midnight – Theolonius Monk

Monk is one of my musical heroes, a pillar of the Jazz community, pioneer and all round music maestro. if you want to know how Jazz piano should be played, watch this man. Everything about his technique, style and composition was unique and compelling enough to listen to even today. I’ve picked out Round about Midnight, a piece mimicked  several times over but none as sublime as Theo.

Stone Roses – I am the resurrection

After a recommendation from my colleagues I decided I’d binge on some Stone Roses classics. For the most part many of these songs are anthems that I’d heard but never attributed to this manchester institution. One of my favourites amongst many great SR songs is todays catablog pick. Enjoy.

Amy Winehouse – Wake up alone> back to black

From Frank through to her critically acclaimed album, Back to Black, Winehouse has demonstrated the dexterity and ability to write captivating meaningful songs, in an age where songwriting seems to have taken a back seat, so far back in fact that this skill is closer to the exit door than the stage.

Amy’s songwriting has been recognised on several occasions by the Ivor Novello awarding committee collecting three awards in as many years; her ability to produce poignant songs that sound so throwback  but so relevant, is as impressive as it is enviable.

The Back to Black album exhibits many examples of such works, however my favourite and one of the more overlooked tracks on this LP is Wake up Alone. Co-Written by Pop/Jazz producer and composer Paul O’Duffy, Wake up Alone is a modern day lament, listing the lingering torment of a love lost. On first listen it may not really resonate with anyone, but the vocals, production and lyrics do not take long to soak at which point you will begin to appreciate what a gem Winehouse really is.

Kings of Leon – Closer

Album – Only By Night

Genre: Rock

An obvious choice but a must on the catablog. This is another outstanding album by the four from tennesse, only by night is their fourth and in my opinion best album to date. With their debut: “Youth and Young Manhood” they brought to the genre some genuinely thoughtful bluesy rock and I’d say it was one of three albums that I have listened to consistently for 4 years. This album takes all the best elements of the last three albums and packs it into a solid fourth album that has no soundfiller, no nonsense and absolutely no match out there right now in the rock genre. One of my favourite songs from the album is the track Closer which has a more electronic essense about it. When listen to at full volume you can really hear the quality of Calebs vocal and the quality of the production that is consistent throughout this album.

Kanye West – Amazing ft Young Jeezy / Heartless

Album:808 & heartbreak

Genre: Avante Guarde Pop

Those of you who know me will know im abit of a Kanye fanboy, and once again my opinions are reinforced by the material that has leaked from his new album 808 & heartbreak. The new LP has attracted a lot of critisism due to his use of autotone..the technology that made T-pain famous. This Voice altering machine has allowed West to experiement with his sound and produce what I consider to be avante guarde pop music, the likes of which we haven’t seen since TGary Numan. I know this sounds hyperbolic but this is the Quincy Jones of our time, the music will fall on deaf ears, but in a time when music is so formulaic we have someone who is attempting musical alchemy and almost succeeding, thats good enough for me.

I’ve not had the internet in so long that I didn’t know what to do with it when i got it back. It was like being a kid in a candy shop and grabbing as many sweets as possible but not really getting exactly what I wanted.

Now I’ve had enough time to binge and consider joinging internet addicts annonymous I am ready to make my first entry into the catablog of music for a month.

Seu Jorge – Life on Mars

Known for his part as the lead character in cult movie, City of God Seu Jorge is also a talented musician, who has adapted this David Bowie classic

The significance of this achievement reverberates the world over; not only today but for years to come. As we reflect the election of President-Elect Barack Obama we must also heed these particular words from his victory speech;

This victory alone is not the change we seek. It is only the chance for us to make that change. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things were.”

So let us celebrate, however we cannot and I’m sure will not rest on our laurels until the more perfect union that this man seeks to create is formed. I have thoroughly enjoyed following the trails and tribulations of the US08 Presidential campaign from drama and circus of caucuses and primaries to the debates of the presidential campaign.

It is difficult to articulate the fervent collective consciousness that has emerged and the emotions that accompany the conclusion of the previous 21 months. So I point you to a great article written by Nora Ephron, that encapsulates how I, certainly her and many other supporters of Barack Obama feel.

I am grateful that I have witnessed this milestone and hope the best is yet to come.

The last month has once again confirmed two things that I already secretely knew, but rarely confessed..

1. I am a geek.

2. I’m addicted to music

For a good 17 days I’ve had intermittent access to the internet due to the ignoramuses at BT and Virgin Media combined. Subsequently I will not have a connection at my humble abode until the 30th of October, approximately 2 weeks from now. Will i survive, I don’t know.. but until then all I can ask you good folk out there to do is deliver to my inbox some mandatory listening…new songs that I must listen to.

all you need to do is hit the recommend tab at the top of the page and it will let you send me a link….go on help a brother out.
