This is the fourth volume of the Composed and Conducted- Catablog of music.

<Volume 3 welcomed more guests than the local Dartford Hilton Hotel, hitting a record total of TWENTYONE entries (yes and a few from me). Although the Dartford Branch of the Hilton may be struggling for business, its name sake of the parisian varitey has definitely seen many more pass through its doors, if Volume 4 can get anywhere near those numbers catatblog will be very happy.

It has been another tough week for music lovers everywhere, as the UK governement promises a crackdown on illegal downloading, hoping the fear of exposing your illegal download of Britney’s 7th comeback album will send you running to the arms of steve jobs and itunes.

With the Oscars approaching I sincerly hope they prove to be more fruitful for the British male performers than the Brits did..seeing ‘British’ american Roson collect best british male may be almost as painful as watching North Londres outfit, Arsenal lift the ‘English’ Premier League.

Rant over, this is another opportunity to share, recommend and find music that may not necessarily find the light of day or just may be of interest to other people. The aim is to have a directory of great music or what I have coined a catablog of music.

Please add your three (max) picks to this week’s catablog. Format is as follows;

Genre
Artist
Song
youtube link
myspace link (if you can be bothered)
abit of blurb, two sentences max (if you’re keen)

Afro Beat
Tony Allen

Losun
remix version of Tony Allen’s Losun – youtube
Tony Allen myspace

Tony Allen is one of the music genius’ still amongst us, former drummer in the band of legendary Nigerian musician and genius FELA KUTI, TOny Allen has been playing in my house ever since My pa’s mate bought him the CD its nothing short of a revelation hope you like

Jazz
Hypnotic Brass Ensemble

War
HBE “war” Youtube
HYpnotic Buisness Myspace page

This flows nicely from the first pick as the Hypnotic brass ensemble provide the remix to the track posted above. “WAR” is an energetic track with good everything, the rest of their stuff carries some amazing melodies. These guys from chicago may not be technically crisp but musically they are on point like bullseye.

Alternative Rock
Morrissey

Tomorrow
Tomorrow youtube
morrissey Myspace

As somber and negative as morrissey can get, I think he still has one of the most distinctive male voices the UK has produced in a long time! His greatest hits are out and his new track is great. Tomorrow is a track made for tomorrow, just never gets old.

    Genre: Progressive Trip Hop Jazz
    Artist: Heliocentrics
    Track: Distant Star

From DJ Shadow’s drummers’ inevitably genre blending and tres hip debut album, ‘Out There’. Influenced by Sun Ra, apparently. Don’t let that put you off!

A track from ‘Fate in a Pleasant Mood’. Less hip but more fun, as you would expect from a man from Saturn (or Brum, Alabama). Also check this for japes, especially if you’ve watched Dumbo:

    Genre: Spiritual Jazz
    Artist: Pharoah Sanders
    Track: N/A

Sun Ra gave Pharoah Sanders his break and his name, but it would have to have been an ever higher power still that gave him his music. Check the circular breathing four & a half minutes in.

Bit an old school classic… absolutely love the background beat in this song artfully contrasted by the angelically high lyrics. Can’t decide whether the video is genius or a little strange but love the song anyways.

Track: Chick Fit (Kissy Sell Out’s Excellent Adventure)
http://analogscene.wordpress.com/2008/02/07/kissy-sells-out/ (link to track at end of article)

Kissy Sell Out takes an uninspiring track from All Saints’ forgettable 2006 comeback and turns it into an epic dance spectacular. The track itself is one part pop and one part electronic house, and despite it’s 7:24 length, it’s a fun ride all the way.
