Six months ago this was the first volume of the Conducted and Composed Catablog of music. Originally conceived as a facebook note, The catablog of music has decided to set itself free and take a naked run down weblane.

This an opportunity to share, recommend and find music that may not necessarily find the light of day or just may be of interest to other people. The aim is to have a directory of great music or what I have coined a catablog of music.

Please add your three (max) picks to this week’s catablog. Format is as follows;

Genre
Artist
Song
youtube link
myspace link (if you can be bothered)
abit of blurb, two sentences max (if you’re keen)

Feist

My moon my man

A great find, great voice, Feist is a Canadian singer songwriter. Although her music has been out there for a while, i felt like sharing it with those of us who haven’t come across her before.

Hip Hop

Cool Kids Myspace

These kids from chicago are about to blow! Injecting some fun and bringing the 80’s vibe back to hip hop, the cool kids have recycled the aura of EPMD, RAKIM & Big Daddy Kane with devastating effect.

    http://www.myspace.com/yaelnaim
Yael Naim is a French/Israeli singer/songwriter from Paris. She sings in English and has a really pretty, light voice, a little bit Feist-like I think.

    Alternative/Indie/Pop

    Ghosts

I have liked this band for aaaaages. Loads of their songs are good and definately check the youtube link because that video is pretty cool. They are Leeds/York based and regularly gig so try and see them because they a really fun, high energy live act.

    Hip Hop
    M.I.A
    Bird Flu (Diplo Remix)
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=fbGP0uTJDdw
M.I.A is a little controversial and I can’t say I am that keen on her first album but this one is ace. Have to move to Boyz and Paper Planes is sick so hope you like this one too!

    Folk/Indie
    Beirut
    Elephant Gun
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjeh6P4sRfw&feature=related
    http://www.myspace.com/beruit
Lovely real music created from everything from accordions to rubbish bins.

    Hip-Hop/Electro
    DJ MEHDI
    Lucky Boy Outlines
(no youtube but please do listen to the Lucky Boy Outlines song on his myspace)
    http://www.myspace.com/djmehdi
The French have been kickin some ass with their electo-hiphop fusion over the last few years. This mainly due to the edbangers label and collaberations with artists such as DJ Mehdi’s wife (singing on this track) who happens to be a fantastic French graffiti artist.

    Indie/Rock
    Metric
    Poster of a Girl
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRxAv3xNdbo&feature=related
    http://www.myspace.com/metricband
Guitars, energy, and lyrics full of humour and dispair. Fronted by Emily Haines who did a great solo album too.
    ———————————
    Grown-up MOR Indie
    Emma Pollock
    Paper and Glue
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAvSoAiO-ug
Ex-Delgados Front Woman makes solo album that might actually be better than former band.

    Indie
    Vampire Weekend
    Oxford Comma
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKHN5LxwJxA
Hype-tasticly good, New Yorkers who mix leftfield lo-fi indie with Paul Simon-esque world music. Nowhere near as bad as that sounds.

    Electropop
    Nut Bros
    That Synching Feeling
    http://www.myspace.com/nutbros
Unsigned Glasgow synth popsters. Actually heard this two years ago now but its taken them that long to get their act together and finish their album.

    what a good idea,

nu soul or something like it,a bit of afro-beat:
    Ayo
    ‘Life is Real’
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYzrYXRGWkU
beautiful & talented: ‘i live my life the way i want, i got nothing to hide’

    Hiphop
    Cunninlynguists
‘Mic Like a Memory’, but i could go on
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wk_jxyJfFKY
QN5 crew, southernunderground but not crunk in any way, even my dad enjoys this sound of hiphop..

    Reggae
    Matisyahu
    ‘Time of Your Song’
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHJu_nCaNAw
jewish rastafari from hawaii, pretty much a rare background
    —————————————-
    Dubstep / Leftfield
    Burial
    Archangel
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hI4bSCy9iE
    http://www.myspace.com/burialuk

Quite simply the best thing to have evolved from UKG / dubstep / . If you’ve grown up with urban music (garage / breaks in particular), you’ll feel an odd sense of being and a strange engagement, you’ll understand what it’s all about without being able to put it into words.

    Neo-soul / Jazz
    Natalie Williams
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSgAGVO7cdo

More talent than Lilly Allen / Kate Gash / Adele have in their mockney tonsils. Been around for a while but keeps to London Jazz clubs rather than being ‘the next big thing’

    Jazztronik
    Samurai
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3saQuQxG_M

Not new – but it has a habit of growing slowly and turning into some kind of piano driven epic journey. Very large.
    ——————————-
    INDIE
    Black Kids
I’m not gonna teach your boyfriend how to dance with you
    http://www.myspace.com/blackkid

Buzzy new band, i think this track is the best of the free ep you can get from their webpage (think its blackkidsmusic.com), one for 2008

    INDIE
    Tinseltown
    I’m a Dog/Skeletons
    http://www.myspace.com/ilovetinseltown

Slightly biased as it’s my sister’s band, but they’ve just signed to Fiction Records and are destined for big things- you heard it here first!

    ELECTRONICA
    Plej
Electronic Music from the Swedish Leftcoast
    http://www.myspace.com/weareplej

This whole album is genius, one of my all time favourites. One of those albums you can put on anywhere anytime and it will fit perfectly. Especially tracks “Lay of the Land” and “You”. They’ve had a new album due for release for about 3 years, seems to be on the verge of release.

    Loads more but i’ll stop!
    —————————-
D, great idea. Enjoying some Feist as I type!

    HIP-HOP
Artist: Dan le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip
Track: Beat that my heart skipped
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESvYRR1Fyug
    http://www.myspace.com/lesacvspip

You’ll have heard their tune ‘Thou Shalt Not Kill’ over the summer, but you might not know they’ve been producing quality tunes ever since. Each track on their myspace page has unusual & infectious beats combined with funny & thought-provoking lyrics, both tickling your grey matter and making you want to dance.
    ——————————–
I got one for you D:

    INDIE
    LYKKE LI
    Little Bit
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUC0ezAlHwE
    http://www.myspace.com/lykkeli

She’s Swedish, and looks a bit mental, but great tune.
